While the media has recently featured our homeschooling journey, in reality our children finished their schooling a while ago - our eldest in 2014, our second daughter in 2017, and the youngest in 2021. So, our insights may not be entirely current, but we're glad to share our family's experiences and journey with you.
For primary and secondary education, we used a blend of curriculum resources, primarily sourcing from a school in South Africa. This provided a solid foundation in core subjects while allowing for flexibility and hands-on learning.
As for the high school years, we transitioned to online coaching options for more challenging subjects, and sometimes had tutors come to our home. While it may seem daunting, online classes can be a great option, especially for subjects like math and science. We also utilized Preply for learning a second language, which gave us access to teachers from around the world.
Regarding university in the UAE, many institutions are now accepting homeschooled students. However, it's important to ensure your children complete the necessary requirements to meet the admissions criteria, which can vary by country and institution. We trained the girls for the US system, so we focused mainly on preparing for the SAT exams. Many parents in the UAE have also had success with the K12 program.
To support your children's social development, I'd recommend finding a supportive community, whether through local homeschooling groups or your religious community. Connecting with other homeschooling families can provide valuable resources, advice, and social opportunities. In the primary years, we incorporated regular social activities like playdates, horse riding, and extracurricular clubs to help our children explore their interests and develop their social skills.
Remember, homeschooling is a journey, and it's important to find what works best for your family. Don't be afraid to try different approaches and adjust as needed.
